Message from Fire Marshal, Sean Barrett

Fire Marshal, Sean Barrett The Fire Prevention Division of Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue offers many services to our community. We provide code enforcement, plan reviews, consultations on projects to make certain they meet code, car seat installation, smoke alarm installation, and address marker installation. One of my goals as the fire marshal is to make certain that there is a working smoke alarm in every home in the fire district. In our effort to achieve that goal, we sponsor an annual door-to-door smoke alarm campaign.

In addition, we provide educational programs in our schools and for senior citizens, fire extinguisher training for our local businesses upon request. Annually we work with the school district and the pre-schools to provide the most up-to-date, age appropriate education possible, proceeding through the entire year reinforcing what the students have learned. We enjoy being invited to make presentations to service organizations and groups on various safety issues. We also work very closely with the local media to provide information to the community, and thank them for their continued support.

One of my favorite events is our annual Safety Fair which is routinely scheduled during the second weekend in September. At this event we invite all of the emergency agencies and disaster organizations to show what they have to offer and present information to the visitors. Usually there is a lot of what I call “toys” to see and touch.

We continue to create working relationships with the City of Florence Planning and Public Works Departments. It has been a great experience working on City code as well as assisting in the maintenance and recordkeeping of the fire hydrants. We have developed a relationship with the Lane County Planning Department, and continue to strengthen our working relationship with the Oregon Department of Forestry assisting them with the implementation of wildfire prevention regulations and education. We also work in conjunction with the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency to regulate outdoor burning.

It is an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens and visitors of the greater Florence/Dunes City area. You can expect to receive the most professional and courteous service from Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue.
